Deloraine Racecourse Recreation Precinct
Preserving Local History Through Contemporary Wayfinding
Project Overview
Flying Colours Group was engaged to deliver the design, fabrication and installation of interpretive and wayfinding signage for the Deloraine Racecourse Recreation Precinct — a significant community redevelopment project led by Meander Valley Council.
Once home to one of Australia’s oldest racecourses, the site has been transformed into a vibrant recreational precinct featuring walking trails, parklands, play spaces and heritage experiences for the wider community.
Our role was to help tell the story of the precinct through a cohesive signage system that honoured the site’s rich history while complementing the landscape and contemporary redevelopment.
The Challenge
The project required a signage solution that balanced functionality, durability and storytelling.
The signage needed to:
- Guide visitors through the precinct clearly and intuitively
- Preserve and communicate the history of the former racecourse
- Integrate seamlessly into the surrounding landscape
- Withstand outdoor environmental conditions
- Reflect the character and identity of the Meander Valley region
The result needed to feel informative without overwhelming the natural environment, while creating a welcoming and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.

Our Solution
Flying Colours Group delivered the project from concept through to installation, managing every stage in-house.
This included:
- Creative design and layout development
- Historical interpretive signage design
- Precinct mapping and wayfinding systems
- Fabrication of custom steel signage structures
- Large format print production
- Site coordination and installation
The interpretive signage was carefully designed to blend heritage storytelling with modern readability, incorporating archival imagery, historical information and precinct mapping into a consistent visual language across the site.
The custom fabricated structures were designed for longevity and visual impact, creating a durable signage solution suited to the outdoor environment while maintaining a refined and contemporary aesthetic.
The Outcome
The completed precinct now offers the Deloraine community and visitors a place to gather, explore and reconnect with local history.
The signage system plays an important role in shaping the visitor experience — guiding movement throughout the precinct while bringing the stories of the former racecourse back to life in an accessible and engaging way.
The project stands as a strong example of how thoughtful signage and placemaking can contribute to community identity, preserve heritage and enhance public spaces for future generations.
